I’m sure if you’ve been in the market for a new vehicle, you’ve seen the large selection of new portable car GPS units as part of an upgrade package. These units come in handy when you find yourself stuck in traffic or lost on the back roads. The truth is they come in handy with every day driving too.

Unfortunately many buy these systems because they seem like a good idea at the time. However, they never really get their money’s worth because they didn’t do the proper research before they bought. Few technology purchases are worth it if you don’t know ahead of time what you need and how to use them.

Having portable automobile GPS is fantastic when you find yourself lost in the north woods. But they can also help you find faster less congested routes when traffic on simple everyday trips. You can bypass streets that are closed for maintenance. A GPS unit can help find shorter routes to special events. Some you may not have been aware existed.

And one of the best things about today’s portable global positioning systems is the prices have dropped to very affordable levels. For me, it is hard to put a price tag on the comfort that owning a device such as this would bring but it is definitely worth the $100-$500 that is currently being charged for most popular models. Although you can still find high end models in the thousands of dollars. Don’t forget that these systems first hit the market at $1,000 on the ultra low end.

Beyond that, your GPS doesn’t need to be folded and you will never need to pull off road to read it. As a matter of fact it will talk to you, it never gets mad at you, and always tells you where to go.  You will love that. Reading a map isn’t something most folks are very skilled at. And it is definitely not something I want to take the time to learn. After all, technology is supposed to make our lives easier, isn’t it?

It’s even possible to transfer files between a GPS and a computer. Look here to get information on what to look for in notebook computers.

Once you have it, you will have absolutely no regrets and while I can’t promise that you will love your auto navigation system as much as I love mine (all systems are not created equal). I think I can safely say that when you are out driving, especially on long trips, traveling will be smoother and less eventful than without one.

A good thing to keep in mind when buying a new car or a new portable vehicle GPS for current car is how much you will actually use your navigation system. Even if you only use it for emergencies, it will likely save you many times what you paid for it. It could save you time, your job, maybe even your life (or the lives of those you love.)

Use your auto navigation system like a second set of eyes. You don’t necessarily need the top of the line system with all the bells and whistles. Just something good enough to help you get from where you are to where you’re going. On the other hand, if you’re one of the people that need to have the latest and best high tech gizmos, you will easily find something to satisfy your need.
